Thirumuruga Kirupananda Variyar Thavathiru Sundara Swamigal Medical Educational and Charitable Trust were started by our Founder Chancellor Dr. A. Shanmugasundaram in the year 1981 to serve the needy in the society. The Trust established the very first medical college in Pondicherry, Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital in the year 2000. Located in NH Pondicherry - Cuddalore Road, a national highway, the self-contained and serene campus is spread over 44 acres of lush green lands.

Initially the Institution was affiliated to Pondicherry University subsequently it came under the ambit of Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation Deemed to be University, in the year 2004. The Institution offers Post Graduate courses in 13 disciplines and Ph.D. programs across various specialities and interdisciplinary areas. The first batches of 100 students were admitted for 2000-2001 sessions, and every year thereafter. At present, the annual intake is 150 MBBS and 74 Post Graduate students, and over 750 UG and POST GRADUATE Students are pursuing their studies at AVMCH.

Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital offers Patient care, Diagnostic, Rehabilitative, Preventive, Pharmacy services. With its fully equipped ICCU, ICU; PICU, NICU and high dependency areas, modular operation theatres equipped with contemporary anaesthesia equipment the broad and Super speciality departments of Cardiology, Urology, Medical Gastroenterology, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery and Nephrology, offer state of tertiary care services to the Union Territory of Pondicherry and nearby districts from Tamilnadu. A variety of Government and third party Insurance schemes are also functional in the system.

The hospital boasts of a well-designed, efficient Dialysis Unit. Laparoscopy equipment for general and gynaecological surgery, ESWL, lithotripsy, PUVA chamber and laser instruments for cosmetic surgery are available for quality patientcare services. BARC approved Cath Lab, 1.5 Tesla MRI, 124 slices CT scan, USGs, automated central laboratory services and a state of art virology lab provide round the clock advanced diagnostic services. A fully operational Pharmacy, state of art Audiology and speech therapy unit, wide range of Physiotherapy / rehabilitative care and a running Blood Bank provide the necessary support for patientcare services. With the additional modern central tower blocks being built, the critical care and corporate healthcare services @ AVMCH are set to reach a new high in the near future.

Community orientation and service is part of the DNA of AVMC, with its 3 Urban and Rural Health Centres and 6 Satellite Centres located in surrounding villages providing wide range of Outreach and Extension activities. The value statements of the Institute are brought to life with the provision of free services for all. The Institute also provides free food to all inpatients daily. The students are get involved all along the way thru the vibrant NSS and RRC units and are also part of the Swatchatha and Unnat Bharat missions. Holistic approach to patientcare is emphasised by the Centre of Yogic Sciences.

All departments in the college are fully equipped with necessary infrastructure. The Institute has a well-appointed, spacious library with internet, Wi-Fi, Audio-Visual facilities and an e - learning centre. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled for the convenience of staff and students. A functional auditorium can accommodate 750 persons for large group events. .

The institute houses a clinical skills lab, which is in the process of being upgraded to a full-fledged Simulation Centre. A dynamic Medical Education Unit provides the necessary Faculty and Professional Development activities. The Scientifique Forum is a vibrant presence in the Institute with its regular academic activities. Apart from this, all departments conduct periodic CMEs, symposia, guest lectures and other events for the benefit of faculty and students.

Research is an integral part of life at AVMC. The Central Biomedical Research Laboratory with its state of molecular diagnostics, Plastination centre, Clinical Physiology Lab and Audiology Research Unit provide the necessary support for research. Fully functional Institute Research Committee, Human and Animal Ethics Committee under the stewardship of Director Medical Research monitor and support the research activities, with focus on multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. To foster research and academic activities and exchange, the Institution has built collaborations and linkages with many national and international Institutions and Universities; the Naresuan University in Thailand, Kyomoto University in Japan and Spartan Health Sciences University, St. Lucia being the notable ones.

In recognition for our efforts focussing on quality, VMRF deemed to be University is accredited by NAAC, the AVMC hospital by NABH - entry level, the virology lab has received NABL Accreditation, the University has consistency been featuring in the NIRF ranking and secured rank 101-150 in the year 2020.

Apart from Undergraduate postgraduate and Ph.D. courses in The Faculty Medicine then, campus houses Nursing College, School of Allied health Sciences and School of physiotherapy in its premises, offering unique opportunities for Interprofessional Education and Research.

AVMC is a green campus with over 33% of the available area covered with lush greenery. Environmental initiatives like Plastic free campus, shaded walkways, vehicle free zone, e-cycles for transport within the campus, rainwater harvesting, recycling of waste water and biodegradable waste, Solar power, etc. emphasise our commitment to UNESCO's Sustainable Development Goals. A beautiful spa, well maintained gym, media rooms in the hostels, a serviceable supermarket, ATM, Cafeteria and fast food joint inside the campus provide the creature comforts for the inmates.
